GS Yuasa Corporation

GS Yuasa Corporation (Tokyo Stock Exchange: 6674) today announced that space-use lithium-ion batteries manufactured by group company GS Yuasa Technology Ltd. ( "GYT") have been installed in the X-ray imaging spectroscopic satellite XRISM ("XRISM” *1). XRISM is scheduled to be launched from the Tanegashima Space Center on August 26, 2023, by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (“JAXA”).

XRISM is an international joint project by JAXA, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and the European Space Agency (ESA). The mission of XRISM is to resolve how large-scale structures of stars, galaxies, and galaxy clusters are formed by measuring the velocity and makeup of plasma, a high-temperature gas that flows between stars and galaxies *2.
Since the completion of successful orbital testing in the early 2000s, GYT’s space-use lithium-ion batteries have been used in more than 200 domestic and overseas spacecraft. Based on this track record, and in recognition of their ability to perform in the high-vacuum environment of space for long periods of time, GYT’s batteries have been selected for use in the XRISM.

GYT develops, manufactures, and distributes batteries and power sources for special applications and supplies high-performance, high-quality batteries for special land, sea, and air environments (from depths of 6,500 meters below the ocean surface to 36,000 kilometers high in space). The GS Yuasa Group will continue to contribute to space development projects through the development and manufacture of high performance lithium-ion batteries.
