~ Efforts to Achieve the SDGs ~ Infrastructure Development Considering Environmental Impact

In the development of infrastructure at its business sites, the GS Yuasa Group also promotes initiatives that consider environmental impact.
This time, we would like to introduce an initiative at the GS Yuasa Gunma Plant, located in Isesaki City, Gunma Prefecture.

The GS Yuasa Gunma Plant manufactures lead-acid batteries (starting batteries) for automobiles. With dozens of heavy-duty trailers and trucks loaded with lead-acid batteries to be shipped and raw materials such as lead, passing through the plant every day, the durability of the site's asphalt pavement had become an issue. With conventional construction methods, ruts appear on the road in less than two years and puddles form when it rains. Forklifts are frequently used on the site, and the rough surface is a safety concern.

Therefore, in 2022, we introduced a pavement method* with superior environmental performance and durability for road rehabilitation work at our business sites. This method is approximately five times more durable than conventional asphalt pavement, reducing the frequency of rehabilitation work and contributing to maintaining site safety. In addition, the use of asphalt modifier made from waste plastic bottles makes this method an effective use of resources and reduces environmental impact.
Measures that contribute to "reducing emissions through waste recycling" are considered to be linked to SDGs' Goal 12, "responsible consumption and production." At the Gunma plant, pavement rehabilitation work using the same approach in FY2023, and has so far made effective use of more than 130,000 used plastic bottles.

The GS Yuasa Group will actively engage in activities to achieve the SDGs and realize a sustainable society.
