(Head office: Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture; President and CEO: Akira Kuriyama), Mitsubishi Research Institute, Inc. (Head office: Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo; President and CEO: Kenji Yabuta), and GS Yuasa International Ltd. (Head Office: Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture; President and CEO: Takashi Abe) have jointly established Hokkaido Sapporo Battery Energy Storage LLC and will be engaged in the grid scale battery storage project (hereinafter referred to as the “Project”) in Sapporo City, Hokkaido.

The Project is supported by subsidies from government in FY 2024-2027.
Since the amount of power generated by renewable energy depends on the weather and is unstable, the effective use of surplus renewable energy and the ability to adjust power fluctuations are issues for the expansion of the introduction of renewable energy in Japan. Energy storage systems for grids help stabilize the power grid by making effective use of surplus power and providing the capacity to adjust supply and demand. By fulfilling these roles, the energy storage plant will promote the expansion of renewable energy and the associated reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to the 2030 energy mix and the achievement of carbon neutrality in 2050.

Prior to the commencement of construction of the plant, a safety prayer ceremony was held in Sapporo, Hokkaido on March 27, 2025. Approximately 60 people involved in the project and construction attended and prayed for the high quality completion of the construction without accident or injury.
