GS Yuasa Lithium-Ion Battery-Based Power Storage System to be Installed at Honda’s Kumamoto Factory Contributing to efficient solar energy utilization
March 16, 2023
GS Yuasa Corporation
GS Yuasa Corporation (Tokyo Stock Exchange: 6674) today announced that consolidated subsidiary GS Yuasa International Ltd. (“GS Yuasa”) has received an order from Tokyo Gas Engineering Solutions Corporation (“TGES”) for a lithium-ion battery-based power storage system facilitating efficient utilization of renewable energy at Honda Motor Co., Ltd.’s Kumamoto Factory. The system will be delivered in fiscal 2023 and is scheduled to operate as a TGES energy service facility from April 2024.
With a capacity of 20MWh*1, the system will be one of the largest*2 demand-side in-house consumption-use power storage facilities in Japan. It will operate in conjunction with a solar power generation system installed by TGES at Honda’s Kumamoto Factory based on a comprehensive energy service model*3. The system will facilitate efficient utilization of solar power (the levels of which fluctuate depending on weather and other conditions) by storing, in lithium-ion batteries, surplus energy generated at times such as days on which the factory is not operating, and then releasing the energy for use at night and other times when solar power is not being generated. The system will be equipped with “LEPS-2-14” industrial lithium-ion batteries newly developed by GS Yuasa. The decision to place the order was made in recognition of GS Yuasa’s product quality, safety measures, and prompt after-sales services.
GS Yuasa will continue contributing to the field of power supply stabilization through expanding sales of its lithium-ion battery power storage systems. By helping to facilitate power grid adjustment capabilities, GS Yuasa is also contributing to further expansion of renewable energy use in support of Japan’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
*1 Sufficient energy to charge approximately 1,250 electric vehicles
*2 As of March 1, 2023; according to GS Yuasa research
*3 TGES provides comprehensive energy services including design, construction, maintenance, and monitoring of energy-related equipment such as solar power generation systems.
Features of lithium-ion battery storage system
1. High level of safety ensured as voltage of all cells can be monitored and temperatures of all modules can be controlled
2. As the modules are fan-less, malfunctions are less likely to occur and the number of parts requiring replacement has been substantially reduced
3. Modules housed in fire prevention ordinance compliant cubicles in accordance with relevant laws and regulations
4. Able to withstand severely cold climatic conditions
GS Yuasa's services
GS Yuasa constantly monitors voltage in all cells and monitors for malfunctions to ensure overall system reliability. In the event of a malfunction, GS Yuasa utilizes its nationwide service network (one of Japan’s largest) to promptly respond to customer needs.
